He shared both of his names with the other contestants - viewer favorites David Archuleta and Kristy Lee Cook - which was probably why the name David Cook didn't ring a loud bell during American Idol. Well, that was before because everyone knows him now. This is the time for David Cook!
THE ACCIDENTAL CONTESTANT
When the seventh season auditions of American Idol rolled into Omaha, Nebraska, 25-year-old David Cook accompanied his brother, Andrew, for moral support. That is, until he decided to give it a try. Singing Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, Al judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell wanted to hear more of Cook in Hollywood. His brother wasn't so lucky, however. With blessings from his family, he proceeded through the auditions as one of the underdogs, so to speak, but would eventually show America what he was capable of.
David Cook stuck to what he knew - rock n roll, a genre he is most comfortable with. He even showcased his great electric and acoustic guitar skills, having started mastering the instrument in his teens, in most of his performances. But he got the audience's full attention as well as Simon Cowell's hard-to-come-by praise with Billie Jean. His performance of the Micheal Jackson song got a million hits on YouTube and Cook was just warming up. David Cook also made his own arrangement of Lionel Richie's Hello, Dolly Parton's Little Sparrow, Mariah Carey's Always Be My Baby, Neil Diamond's All I Really Need Is You, Roberta Flack's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Aerosmith's I Don't Want To Miss A Thing.
BATTLE OF THE DAVIDS
The season finale came down to a head-to-head between tween sensation, David Archuleta, and cougar (refers to older women) fave, David Cook. Archuleta, the `boy to beat' came on strong and swinging. Cook sang from the heart and had fun. Cowell's "I believe we have a knockout." comment for choirboy Archuleta had all signs leading to him for the win but Cook remained unfazed.
In an unlikely gesture by the acid-tongued judge but a welcome surprise nonetheless before the winner was announced, Cowell apologized to Cook for his comment. Says Cowell, "It was not as clear cut as we called it. I apologize." and it might as well have been a premonition for Cook. After 97 million votes cast, David Cook emerged victorious with a 12-million difference from Archuleta.
RECORD BREAKER
Now, the real work begins for the newly-crowned Idol. First up, making his dreams come true. David Cook has signed on to Simon Fuller's 19 Recordings/RCA Records and will work on his album while touring with the 2008 American Idol contestants this July. Time of My Life, the winning song of the 2008 American Idol Songwriter's Competition, which Cook also sang in the finale, will be his first single.
Cook has also set a record for the debut entries of 11 titles in the Billboard Hot 100. Fourteen songs jump in the Hot Digital Songs list, too and The Time of My Life is No. 1 on iTunes Top 10. His versions of U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and Emily Shackleton's Dream Big are also in the list. Wow!
On The Today Show, David Cook was asked about his opinion of his growing appeal with cougars (mostly older women) and fans in general: "As far as people thinking I'm pretty or something," he said, "I don't know. It's amazing what a haircut and forgetting to shave will do." Cougars for Cook!
