Shifting careers and opting to work in a call center proved to be the best decision I have ever made and I’ll tell you why.
The advent of call centers paved the way for a lifestyle change for most Filipino professionals, and I am one of them. The call center industry has grown from having only four key players more than a decade ago. Now there are call centers everywhere in Metro Manila and have also invaded the key provinces in the country.
Not too long ago, the BPO industry was dubbed as a sunshine industry in the Philippines. Today, customer service and telemarketing are not just the main offerings of call centers. Many call center companies have wisely included almost of all types of customer relation services like technical support, education, financial services and collections.
Contrary to what most people think, working in a call center is more than just getting a fat paycheck. Yes, being paid more than the average office employee is one of the perks of being a part of a call center company, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Working in a call center gave me the opportunity to undergo comprehensive trainings to further hone my skills. There is also equal opportunity being given to rank and file staff, supervisors and managers alike to go to our main office in the United States and undergo training there. Isn’t that neat?
BPO companies offer adequate work advantages to agents. They make sure their employees are properly motivated – especially their front liners, the call center agents. Well motivated employees perform better resulting to more satisfied customers, thereby increasing company profits.
Working in the call center industry in the Philippines is considered a lucrative profession especially if you get to be assigned in the night shifts. Because of the time difference, most call center companies operate at night, so aside from the basic salary, night shift employees get additional compensations like night differential, transportation or gas allowance, and meal allowance. Some big call center companies even have company issued cellular phones and laptops.
Being assigned to a sales account also has its additional perks. We get to be given spiffs for achieving and exceeding sales quotas. Cash incentives are given to individual and group performers.
Call center jobs can be stressful and high paying at the same time. This is the main reason why fresh graduates and professionals from other industries are being lured to take on call center jobs.
Most call center companies know how to take care of employees. Aside from giving out huge compensations, they also offer team building activities. This is one way of helping their employees cope, as well as manage their stress.
Working in a call center may have its downside. Clients are based overseas and the time difference is so obvious that you will have to work at night. Call centers also run on a 24/7 basis so there is shifting schedule. You don’t get to observe Philippine holidays and you could be assigned to work on weekends.
Quite trivial, you might say, considering the wonderful benefits you get from working in a call center.
Like most jobs, what is really important is that you love what you do and getting a fat paycheck is just icing on the cake.
