Ever since the call center and business process outsourcing industries have invaded the Philippines, working at night has become a lifestyle for many Filipinos. In order to fill the time difference between the Philippines and clients who are mostly located in the West, a lot of Filipinos have no choice but to turn themselves into nocturnal beings.
Working during the graveyard shift may have some perks, like getting night differential pay, avoiding rush hour, traffic jams and crowded streets, evading the summer sun if it becomes too hot, and becoming unaffected by the number coding scheme if you drive your own car.
However, one thing that is becomes pretty hard when having to work during the night shift would be, having to turn the body clock around completely. It’s a 180-degree turn around, embracing to be one of those "daysleepers" and "nightwalkers". While most people are already preparing their beds for slumber, graveyard shifters are just trying to prepare for a night’s work. Worse is, a lot of people are having a hard time adjusting to the moonlight shift.
So how does one survive the night shift?
• Do power naps. Although some will have a hard time having some shuteye because noise would be pretty much everywhere since everyone else is wide awake, getting power naps whenever possible should do the trick.
• Avoid watching TV, surfing the net, or listening to lively music during the day. Such activities would prove to be entertaining, instead of sleep-inducing.
• Eat light instead of heavy meals. Pinoys love to take “siestas” or afternoon naps especially after a hearty lunch. Aside from slowing down metabolism and digestion, eating heavy meals before sleeping during the day won’t be of much help in reversing body clock. If the body’s used to ingesting and digesting food during the day, then dozing off would be hard because the body will be asking for food. Hunger will eventually overpower sleepiness.
• Drink coffee at night and not during breakfast. Yes, coffee belongs to the "breakfast club", but sleep won't come if the body receives its caffeine buzz when it should be prepping for sleep.
• Make the bedroom darker during daytime. If the room atmosphere and lighting simulates the night, then the mind and the body could be tricked into sleeping.
