The call center industry made a huge impact on the Philippines’ employment make up. Since most BPO companies cater to clients based in the United States, it follows that they operate at night; and being a call center agent in the Philippines means working on shifting schedules, especially at night.
For people who are not used to being awake at night, if you start working in a call center, your body clock would definitely be altered. Call centers usually operate on a 24/7 basis, this is true especially for call centers with customer service or technical help desk accounts so it is certain that these companies have shifting schedules.
Working on a shifting schedule has a great impact on your health. For one, your sleeping habits are affected. Most call centers change schedules on a monthly basis, while some maintain schedule changes every two or three months.
Working at night surely has great effect on someone’s weight too. Recent studies show that call center agents are more prone to being obese since there is a tendency for them to eat unhealthy snacks to stay awake. It also doesn’t help that most fast food chains, pizza stores, even coffee shops are now open 24 hours, especially if there are call center offices in the area.
It really posts a challenge for every call center agent to cope, or even survive shifting schedules. So how do you go about it?
If you are a call center agent, the first thing that you need to ensure is that you get enough sleep. Nothing beats having 7 to 8 hours worth of sleep daily to stay healthy. If you work nights, sleeping during the day is a dilemma. What you can do is to ensure that your room is darker and cooler to help you sleep better.
Your body’s metabolism slows down at night so you need to make sure that you eat light during your shift and eat a moderate breakfast before you sleep. Some agents have found it effective to skip breakfast and go straight to sleep then they just eat a full dinner before going to work.
It is also important to stay fit. Do a little exercise when you wake up. It would also be necessary to take vitamins and stay away from smoking and alcohol to keep your immune system strong.
Working in a call center can sometimes take you away from your family. You end up working on weekends, and even holidays. Even if you’re working in a call center, you still need to ensure that you spend quality time with your loved ones.
It would also help if you are able to socialize well with your co-workers. You can share each other’s techniques on how they are able to survive shifting schedules. Your family and friends are the ones that make you sane so make sure that you maintain a close relationship with them.
Make time for yourself as well, during your rest days. Your body also needs a little pampering. Reward yourself at least once or twice a month – go to a spa or get a massage.
Being on a shifting schedule can definitely change your life. It can indeed become a lifestyle change for some. Like with all jobs, it is important that you learn to love your work because if you love your work, having a fixed or shifting schedule would not matter anymore.
Working in a call center with shifting schedules can be fun – it’s just a matter of changing your perspective and turning a negative thing into positive. So if you decide to work in a call center, embrace it and it will surely become rewarding in the long run.
